Bristorm have re-joined the PSSA after a short
absence. They are specialists in the design
and manufacture of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation
systems suitable for securing large high-profile
sites, perimeters and borders. Over recent
years, their product quality and product
performance has been recognised worldwide
and they have developed a respected brand
across the UK and the Middle East.
Bristorm is the security division of Hill and
Smith Limited whose history dates back to
1824. Hill and Smith have unprecedented
experience in the development of highway
crash barriers and infrastructure products and
over the years have innovated to meet the
demands of the changing environment. Hill
and Smith Limited are members of the Hill and
Smith Holdings (PLC) Infrastructure Products
Group; the international group has subsidiary
companies across the world each equally
renowned for maintaining the group’s efforts
in achieving high quality and high product
performance throughout. Being a member
of the Hill & Smith Holdings PLC results in
their stringent compliance with all necessary
ISO certifications, including: ISO 9001:2008,
ISO 14001:2004, PAS 99:2012 and OHSAS
19001:2007.
Bristorm were welcomed to the group in
2007 and utilised the Hill and Smith wire rope
technologies to develop an innovative range
of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation, anti-vehicle
fences. These novel ‘Bristorm’ solutions have
experienced unrivalled levels of success and
the differing levels of protection makes them
cost-effective yet appropriate solutions for
securing borders and site perimeters. Bristorm’s
latest anti vehicle wire rope fence offers zero
penetration and zero major debris, a first for
the UK.
Bristorm’s current range of anti-vehicle
fence and bollards provide effective counter
terror protection when high level perimeter
security is required. However, in line with the
current threat, Bristorm have developed a
range of PAS 68 Street Furniture products and
a selection of Impeder Bollard Sleeves that are
all aesthetically pleasing. Their range maintains
their crash rated performance making them
suitable counter terror measures for city
centres, the street scene and commercial and
industrial sites. Their range includes: planters,
living walls and cycle hoops.
All Bristorm products are tested at MIRA
and TRL to PAS 68, IWA 14 and ASTM F2656.
Their range thus far is inclusive of: Anti Vehicle
Perimeter Fencing, Anti Vehicle Impeder
Bollards, Temporary Wire Rope Security,
CombinedWire Rope and Mesh Fencing, Heavy
Duty Security Fencing, PAS 68 Street Furniture
and Impeder Bollard Sleeve Covers.

Earlier this year the government published a
Green Paper, Building an Industrial Strategy.
Trade associations and companies were
invited to respond with their thoughts
on the key policy areas, or “pillars”, that
the government had identified as being
fundamental to the success of the UK
economy.
The PSSA provided its input via its
membership of the UK’s Security and
Resilience Industry Suppliers Community
(RISC). RISC is an inclusive alliance of trade
associations and bodies which represent the
UK’s security and resilience sector.
The purpose of RISC is to act as an
umbrella association in order to reduce the
fragmented way in which the Government
engages with the security and resilience
sector, and to work with Government
through the Home Office (Office for
Security and Counter Terrorism) and other
departments and agencies, on national
security and resilience issues.
The RISC response included suggestions
for priority areas for science, research
and innovation investment, for what the
UK can do to create an environment that
supports the commercialisation of ideas,
how innovation can be encouraged through
public procurement and how government
can improve its support for new and existing
exporters.
Rob Oliver, PSSA
“The Green Paper sets out a structure for
the development of government policy
and is welcome. However, it is one thing
to recognise that as a country “we must to
better” and another as to how we do it. The
Industrial Strategy is likely to be the work
of a full parliament and we will keep PSSA
members briefed on initiatives which may
benefit their businesses.”
